STOCKHOLM – Beauty Beyond Compare
By Estanislao Alonso Chapel

If you are one of those travel – bound and want to know and try out what Stockholm has to offer then join us as we show you the beauty that is Stockholm. Stockholm is the capital and the largest city of Sweden.

Geographically, Stockholm is built on fourteen islands which are linked by 57 bridges. Its strategic location was contributed by its 750 year old history and rich culture. Known to offer one of the best sceneries in the world, from its exceptionally immense greenery to beautiful buildings and architecture, Stockholm was recently awarded as the first ever European Green Capital in 2010. Other distinctive traits of the city are the abundant clean water and fresh air.

Its world-class attractions make Stockholm a favourable location for special events and occasions. There are a million and one things to do in Stockholm that will surely make your trip, a trip of a lifetime.

One should not miss to visit Gamla Stan, also known as the Old Town. It is the oldest, largest and the best-preserved medieval city center in the world, located in Stadsholmen where Stockholm was built as a structure for defense in the 12th century.

Wide variety of attractions such as shopping centers, restaurants, cafes and bars are lined on the each side of the narrow winding street of Gamla Stan. Stores display Swedish handicrafts, souvenirs and antiques.

You can find beautiful churches in the Old Town and one of those is the Storkyrkan, Stockholm’s national cathedral. It is not, however, the biggest attraction in Stockholm, but the Royal Palace. It is one of the largest palaces in the world with more than 600 rooms. What makes the palace interesting is the Royal Armoury, a museum for armour suits used by royals during the ancient times. In addition, the mounted display and regular changing of guard are great attractions.

Since Stockholm was built on 14 islands, its proximity to water views makes it a popular tourist attraction that any tourist should not miss. Sightseeing by boat is highly advisable because one can have delightful scenery every time the cruise ship stops. One of its destinations is The Vasa Museum in Stockholm. Its historical background is as interesting as how it was restored. It is a 230-feet warship sank during its maiden voyage in 1628 in Stockholm harbour and was only salvaged later in 1961.

Experience in Stockholm one of the best international art museum, the Moderna Museet. It features masterpieces from the world’s acclaimed foreign and Swedish artists. The Stadshuset or the City Hall is the Stockholm’s prominent landmark, built during the 20th century. Every 10th of December, a Nobel Banquet is held in its Blue and Golden Halls.

Another interesting world-class museum in Stockholm is the Skansen. It is the world’s oldest yet still the most beautiful open-air museum in Djurgarden. It features the over-all of Stockholm in its miniature display. It is a good place for a family to go especially during Christmas because of its famous Christmas market and buffet which can be enjoyed especially by children.

Get fascinated with the unique sculpture park called the Millesgarden, named after its sculptor Carl Milles. If you want an enjoyable and worthwhile trip for your children, Junibacken is the place to be. It is a world of storybook with characters taken from an author Astrid Lindgren. Experience all these and more, only in Stockholm!
