Being a British Overseas Territory and headland, Gibraltar rests on the southern coast of Spain.  The territory is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m-high limestone ridge.  The Moors made the first settlement in the Middle Ages and later the the region was ruled by Spain.  The outpost eventually fell under the British reign in 1713.  Layers of fortifications are prevalent including the remains of a 14th-century Moorish Castle and the 18th century Great Siege Tunnels, which were extended during the World War II.  (photo credit: Marcin Krzyzak)
